Subletting can be legal, so long as you have written permission or an agreement with your Landlord. However most leases in the UK have a stipulation that subleasing is not allowed.

If you are the sublet of a space, you will not be help legally accountable. But if you are leasing your room and anything happens to the property, you will be held fully accountable.
